MESSENGER FROM THE DEVIL

MESSENGER FROM THE DEVIL
"Another man, Jonathan Lowder, said Bishop tried to choke him, and she took on the forms of a black pig and a monster with the body of a monkey, the feet of a rooster, and the face of a wizened old man. The creature told him it was a messenger from the Devil, and promised him riches in exchange for allegiance."
 Rosemary Ellen Guiley, Haunted Salem

Here are some more pics from the Cornell University exhibit The World Bewitched.

Here's the most famous illustration of witch familiars Matthew Hopkins' The Discovery Of Witches from 1647: Hopkins, the self-styled Witch Finder General, stressed the importance of familiars in detecting witches. The frontspiece shows Elizabeth Clarke, who was hanged on evidence of her familiars at Chelmsford in 1645.

And here's Ulrich Molitor's Von Den Unbolden Oder Hexen from 1493: This handbook on how to identify witches by their behavior shows a male witch riding a wolf, and the association with werewolves.

I also wanted to say, while posting my last set of magical monsters, an Instagram follower (@lukac2002) mentioned this creature and even provided the source material. I'm very grateful and love when people suggest things! Especially when they're this weird!
