UVUUDAUM

UVUUDAUM
"An uvuudaum is a humanoid creature with two standard human arms that protrude from the torso where expected, but whose lower body has six arms instead of legs, splayed spiderlike below it (tough loose clothing somewhat drapes its grotesque legs). The real horror is the taillike appendage replacing what would be a head on a normal creature. At the very end of the appendage is an ironhard spike."
Andy Collins, Bruce R. Cordeil & Tomas M. Reid, Epic Level Handbook

SIBRIEX

SIBRIEX
"The unsettling stink of rotting flowers surrounds the large, bloated figure that floats lazily in the air. The demon is hardly more than a malformed face the size of a wagon. Where its ears should be are instead a pair of atrophied arms with hands ending in tremulous digits. Instead of a body, everything below its neck is a writhing nest of puckers and stalks. It is tethered to the surrounding ground by four steel chains that end in razor-sharp spikes."
Ed Stark, Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

RUTTERKIN

RUTTERKIN
"Rutterkin look much like ugly humans or humanoids. They are nearly hairless and have pointed skulls, large features and backward pointing ears. Rutterkin have misshapen bodies and limbs. They are one of the weakest but most bullying kinds of demons."
Gary Gygax, The Lost Caverns Of Tsojcanth

"This hunched and misshapen figure stands 6 feet tall. Its features are asymmetrical and deformed, and its mottled green and violet skin is hairless except for one or two uncomfortable looking patches of wiry bristles. The fiend has an elongated head with tiny red eyes that swell with hate."
Ed Stark, Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

MIND FLAYER

MIND FLAYER
"This is a super-intelligent, man-shaped creature with four tentacles by its mouth which it uses to strike its prey. If a tentacle hits it will then penetrate to the brain, draw it forth, and the monster will devour it."
Gary Gygax, Strategic Review Volume 1 Number 1

The mindflayer's skin glistens with slime. Its skin color is a nauseous mauve, its tentacles being purplish black, A mind flayer's eyes are a dead while, no pupil being evident. The long fingers of each hand are reddish, but the hands are mauve."
Gary Gygax, Monster Manual I

DHARCULUS

DHARCULUS
"The dharculus is a creature native to the Far Realm. These particularly deadly creatures hunt all other creatures that cross their paths without regard to rank or hierarchy. They possess little fear, being well protected from its prey."

"The dharculus are swimmers of the Border Ethereal; however, they have a singular ability to insert their made tentacle ends into the Prime Material Plane. These tentacles appear as a swarm of blind eel-like creatures slinging through the very air in a deadly school. To those who can see into the Ethereal, the 'eels' are merely the protruding tentacle tips of the dharculus. Following the multiple tentacles back, one would see that they come together in a fused braid, a thick and rigid worm link tube coming the main body of the creature. The posterior end of the cylindrical body loops back towards the front the a giant question mark, ending in a huge, drooling maw filled with razor-sharp teeth. Five of the darculus' tentacle end in eyes instead of manipulator maws;"

TOMB TAPPER

TOMB TAPPER
"Tappers are tall and humanoid, with very hard, blue-gray skin and great claws which can dig through solid rock. They are sometimes called “the Faceless” due to their featureless heads."

"Tappers have gigantic mouths in their abdomens. These jaws can crush rock, from which Tappers extract mineral sustenance."
Ed Greenwood, Dragon Magazine #41

TROLL

TROLL
"Troll hide is a nauseating moss green, mottled green and gray, or pulrid gray. The writhing hair-like growth upon a troll's head is greenish black or iron gray, The eyes of a troll are dull black."
Gary Gygax, Monster Manual

NITRODJINN

NITRODJINN
"The nocturnal creature of desolate areas known as the Nitrodjinn is a rare and strange being. Each creature is invariably associated with an atomic energy source such as a reactor or large battery, from which it appears to draw its 'life force.' Each being manipulates the local weather conditions to produce a thick fog for a 100-meter radius around the atomic power source."

"In ultraviolet light or when seen without the surrounding fog, this being appears to have a vaguely humanoid torso with four arms and a featureless head. The lower half of the body is a long serpentine form stretching along the ground all the way back to the power source."
Roger Moore, Dragon Magazine #75

WINGLESS WONDER

WINGLESS WONDER
"The Wingless Wonder is a comical beast that resembles a walking egg (which it has also been called). It stands rather unsteadily on two weak legs that have rubbery, sticky bases, and it has two small arms which it flaps constantly (hence its name). Its mouth is atop its head, surrounded by a fringe of tentacles which are are extendable to 12 feet. Most of these creatures eat only fruits and vegetables and have nine such tentacles. A rare (20% of all Wonders) type is omnivorous and has 12 tentacles."

"Wonders are blue-green in color with purplish undersides. Their skin, which is covered by fuzz, is delicate and does not heal quickly."

"The creatures are apparently bisexual. When a solitary Wonder encounters another of its species, the two will intertwine their tentacles and chitter excitedly in chorus for 2 rounds. This appears to be a mating contact."
Ed Greenwood, Dragon Magazine #40

EYE OF THE DEEP

EYE OF THE DEEP
"It is possible that this monster is a relative of the beholder, for There are remarkable similarities between the two species. The eye of the deep dwells only at great depths of the ocean, floating slowly about, stalking prey. It has two huge crab-like pincers to seize its victims and a mouth full of small sharp teeth, its primary weapons, however, are its eyes. The creature has a large central eye which emits a blinding flash of light to dazzle and stun those in its ray. The eye of the deep also has two smaller eyes on long stalks with which it is able to create an illusion; or, acting independently, the small eyes are able to cast hold person and hold monster spells respectively."

DECATON

DECATON
"There are exactly 100 decatons, the lowest order of officials found in Nirvana, These creatures appear as 10-tentacled spheres on stumpy legs and are overseers of the physical welfare of the base modrons. One deeaton is assigned to each sector of Nirvana, while the remaining 36 serve with the hextons commanding the armed forces of the plane."

OCULON

OCULON
"The oculon is an enchanted monster created by a high-level magic-user to act as an assistant or guardian. The process of creating one is long and quite involved, but the resulting being is fairly powerful because of the many special skills it has. An oculon is humanoid in shape, though only vaguely so, and is 4 feet tall at the shoulder. Instead of a human head, the oculon has a flexible neck about 3 feet in length with a single large eye at the end. The neck is 2” in diameter and the eye is 4” across."

"The body of an oculon is light grey in color, and slightly glossy. The cornea of the eye is dark grey, and the pupil of the eye is black."
Roger E. Moore, Dragon Magazine #53

ROPER

ROPER
"Ropers inhabit subterranean caverns. They prey upon all forms of creatures, but humans are their favorite form of food. These monsters can stand upright in order to resemble a pillar or stalagmite or flatten themselves to full length upon the floor so as to look like nothing more than a hump. The roper has six strands of strong, sticky rope-like excretion which it can shoot from 2'-5'."

"This yellowish gray monster appears to be a mass of foul, festering corruption. The roper is cigar-shaped, about 9' long, with a diameter of some 3'."
Gary Gygax, Monster Manual I

DEATH SHEEP

DEATH SHEEP
"These deadly sheep roam the verdant hillsides where they live, ravaging anything in their paths. From a distance, they seem to be nothing more than wild, somewhat dirty sheep. Up close, however, the sheep can be seen to have an evil nature. Their large mouths are filled with long, sharp black teeth that drip vile ichor. These sheep attack any living thing that they can find, fearing nothing and fighting to the death."

SKULLRIDER

SKULLRIDER
"A skullrider is a spider-like creature whose eight segmented legs grow out of a body the size and shape of a human skull. Its shiny exoskeleton is the approximate color and texture of human bone, supporting the illusion. Vicious mandibles are hidden inside the "jawbone" of the skull; these mandibles are retractable, as are the creature's eight short legs. The bony exoskeleton prevents body heat from emanating, thus making the skullrider 'invisible' to infravision. A skullrider with mandibles and legs retracted is thus 90% indistinguishable from a regular human skull."

CARRION CRAWLER

CARRION CRAWLER
“Carrion crawlers strongly resemble a cross between a giant green cutworm and a huge cephalopod. They are usually found only in subterranean areas. A carrion crawler moves quite rapidly on its multiple legs despite its bulk, and a wall or ceiling is as easily traveled as a floor, for each of the beast's feet are equipped with sharp claws which hold it fast. The head is equipped with 8 tentacles which flail at prey;”

MONGRELFOLK

MONGRELFOLK
"They are a mixture of many different creatures, each mongrelman having possibly the blood of humans, orcs, gnolls, ogres, dwarves, hobgoblins, bugbears, elves, bullywugs and others flowing through his or her veins."
Gary Gygax, Monster Manual II

CATOBLEPAS

CATOBLEPAS
"This nightmare creature is loathsome beyond description and has no redeeming features. Its body resembles that of a huge, bloated buffalo and gives off an offensive odor. The catoblepas' neck is long and thin, and perched atop it is a big head uglier than that of a warthog. Its legs are thick and stumpy, much like a hippopotamus. The creature's tail is strong and snakey, however, and moves with amazing swiftness to strike enemies. The gaze of the catoblepas is equal to a death ray, extending 6" from the eyes (even into the astral and ethereal planes). Any creature which meets this gaze dies without any chance to save itself."

KOBOLD

KOBOLD
"The hide of kabolds runs from very dark rusty brawn to a rusty black. They have no hair. Their eyes are reddish and their small horns are tan to white. They favor red or orange garb. Kobolds live for up to 135 years."
Gary Gygax, Monster Manual

SPIDER-HORSE

SPIDER-HORSE
“Spider-horses, as the name suggests, are magical crossbreeds of a riding horse and a giant spider. The body is primarily horse-like, although a spidery abdomen, complete with spinnerets, sticks out at the end. Four of the spider-horse’s legs are horse-like, down to the hooves, while four more spider-like legs grow out of the horse body. The spider legs are situated between the front and rear horse legs. The head is equine in nature except for the eight eyes which are compound.”
Johnathan M. Richards, Dragon Magazine #243
