BOKRUG

BOKRUG
"However this may be, it is certain that they worshipped a sea-green stone idol chiselled in the likeness of Bokrug, the great water-lizard; before which they danced horribly when the moon was gibbous."

"Here was done the very secret and ancient rite in detestation of Bokrug, the water-lizard, and here rested the altar of chrysolite which bore the DOOM-scrawl of Taran-Ish."
H.P. Lovecraft, The Doom That Came To Sarnath

  1. One of the most underrated Lovecraft stories, illustrated right. The Dunsany style stories don't get enough love.

  2. Here we have a story of a small god avenging a people who were minding their own business and not really the concern of their neighbors. The humans decided that, just because of their LOOKS, that they didn't belong in this world. So they killed these people and rubbled the city of Ib and bore away their image of Bokrug to mock it.

Bokrug's revenge was 2-fold. The high priest was found dead of horror and the word DOOM scrawled on the altar. Then, 1000 years later, Bokrug struck and the human city vanished and the mines as well !
