DÜRER DEMON

DÜRER DEMON
"Riding steadfastly through a dark Nordic gorge, Dürer's knight rides past Death on a Pale Horse, who holds out an hourglass as a reminder of life's brevity, and is followed closely behind by a pig-snouted Devil."
The Met

FLORIS DEMON

FLORIS DEMON
"The dense tangle of figures that fills the pictorial space is oppressive in its effect, all the more so as the painting is a monumental altarpiece measuring around three meters in height. Standing immediately in front of the picture, viewers cannot but feel they are being swept into the abyss by the sheer force of the tumbling bodies. The richness of detail and the depiction of the rebel angels as fantastical hybrid creatures continue the pictorial idiom of Hieronymus Bosch, while the sculptural modelling and virtuoso foreshortening of the bodies are inspired by the Italian art that Floris had studied during his time in Italy."
Claudia Koch, Royal Museum Of Fine Arts

FRÉMIET DEMON

FRÉMIET DEMON
"French sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet merged the contemporary fascination with medieval imagery—particularly gargoyles—with his lifelong zoological studies. The gothic influence shows in each creature’s set of batlike wings, while the pelican’s mismatched but eerily realistic frog body displays Frémiet’s naturalist bent."

YATES THOMPSON DEMON

YATES THOMPSON DEMON
"The devils shown tormenting the saint have become much more imaginative in form. One is based on a lobster, two have accessory faces in their abdomens, and they are starting to depart from nature."
Hoakley, The Story In Paintings: The Temptation Of Saint Anthony, Before 1560

*This demon is inspired by the painting Saint Anthony And Tormenting Demons, a page from an illuminated version of Jean de Vignay, La Légende Dorée, Volume II from 1465-1475

FGS DEMON

 FGS DEMON
"The scene—featuring a monstrous creature conjured by an evil rite, a terrified sorcerer fleeing the scene, and an unsuspecting, bound child destined for sacrifice—clearly reveals its debt to the paintings of magic and witchcraft created by Salvator Rosa during his Florentine period (autumn 1639–1650), works that were highly coveted by connoisseurs."
Gonnelli

*This demon is inspired by the painting A Scene Of Witchcraft (1674) by FGS.
