REICHLICH DEMON

REICHLICH DEMON
"The demons dragging them away have odd anatomical arrangements. At the bottom center one of the demons even gives the viewer a toothy grin."
The Chrysler Museum

*This demon is inspired by the painting The Last Judgment (1490) by Marx Reichlich.

Once the Bermejo painting got me started I was excited to research more demons. This painting by Marx Reichlich is pretty standard for depictions of the Last Judgment; Christ above the earth, souls going to heaven on one side, hell on the other. However, center stage at the bottom, is a demon that really steals the show. It's not your typical humanoid with mouths for elbows & knees and faces on butts. This creep looks like she's straight out of a Clive Barker story. Black & red with metallic armor, a sassy walk and a delightful grin! I had to draw this weirdo.

Of the demons I've drawn based on medieval & renaissance paintings, I've only seen three in person:

However, after researching this painting more, I've discovered it's only a 5 hour drive away at the Chrysler Museum Of Art in Norfolk VA! Here's a delightful quote from their newsletter

"Samuel, an energetic 3rd grader, sped through several upstairs galleries before finding the “rug room,” our gallery featuring Flemish Renaissance tapestries. Between them, his eyes fixed on Marx Reichlich’s Last Judgment. “I like these bright colors, but it’s also dark,” he said. As Samuel looked to the bottom right of the painting, he lurched back. “That’s kind of creepy,” he said, carefully keeping his distance from the sadistic dragons and souls suffering in Hell."
Chrysler the Magazine Of the Chrysler Museum Of Art, June 2009

Based on Samuel's critique, I may have to make the trip!
